Melissa Bateman grew up on the beautiful coast of Maine. The daughter of a fine artist and an industrial designer, her interest in art was always encouraged. By the time she was fourteen she had started to win awards and gain recognition for her drawing, particularly for her skills in portraiture.

She pursued a career in textile design after graduating from Pratt Institute, and has continued this work for over twenty five years.   In 2007, after a long hiatus from practicing fine art, she returned to study drawing and painting from some of the country's most renowned classical artists. She was awarded a Certificate of Excellence by the Portrait Society of America for her portrait, "My Mother" in 2012.

Since then she has continued to expand her skills in drawing and painting people as her subjects, as she considers practicing portraiture to be the most personal and gratifying aspect of being an artist.
